The best ShipStation alternatives for a small store are Pirate Ship if you ship with USPS and UPS, Veeqo if you also need FedEx or DHL, and Shippo if you want a paid plan with phone support. Pirate Ship and Veeqo's shipping plan both cost $0 a month, compared with $39.99 for ShipStation's Starter plan at 200 orders. ShipStation is still worth keeping if you rely on your own carrier accounts or its Standard plan automation.

Most pages on this topic come from vendors promoting themselves, including several of the companies below. Sellbino isn't a shipping vendor and hasn't tested these tools. The comparison is based on their published plans as of November 2026, and it's aimed at stores shipping up to a few hundred orders a month.

What ShipStation costs now

ShipStation has no free plan, just a 30-day trial. Its pricing page lists tiers by monthly shipments, and the jump from one tier to the next is what catches small stores:

Monthly shipmentsStarterStandard
50$14.99$29.99
100$29.99$59.99
500$39.99$89.99
1,000$79.99$149.99

There's no tier between 100 and 500, so I've assumed a 200-order store needs the 500 tier. The page also shows a 20% saving for annual billing, and Premium starts at $349.99, which is out of range for most stores reading this.

The plan limits matter as much as the price:

  • Starter doesn't include your own general carrier accounts, branded tracking pages or branded notification emails. It has 3 users and no option to add more.
  • Standard adds your existing carrier accounts, unlimited automations, branded tracking, phone support and 10 users.

So if you're using ShipStation for your own negotiated rates, Standard is the plan you should compare against, not Starter.

ShipStation alternatives: the monthly cost at 50, 200 and 500 orders

This table shows software fees only, assuming one label per order and monthly billing. Postage is separate on all of them.

Tool and plan50 orders200 orders500 orders
ShipStation Starter$14.99$39.99$39.99
ShipStation Standard$29.99$89.99$89.99
Pirate Ship$0$0$0
Veeqo Shipping$0$0$0
Shippo Pro$19$19$29
ShippingEasy$19.99$19.99$29.99
Ordoro$0$59$59

Here's where those numbers come from, all as of November 2026:

Over a year, the gap adds up. At 200 orders, ShipStation Starter costs $479.88 and Shippo Pro costs $228, a difference of $251.88. ShipStation Standard costs $1,079.88 at that volume, so a store that moves to Pirate Ship keeps all of it.

Postage can matter more than the subscription

Don't choose on the software fee alone. Published postage rates change by service, weight and zone, and I can't give you a fair average across every tool. But the sums are simple: at 500 orders, a label that's 10¢ cheaper saves $50 a month. That's more than the entire gap between Shippo Pro and ShipStation Starter.

So before you switch, take five of your most common shipments and quote each one in your current tool and the new one. Use the real weight, box size and destination. Veeqo's rates, for example, are based on Amazon's negotiated pricing, and Pirate Ship claims USPS Commercial Pricing, but only a quote on your own parcels will tell you what you'd pay.

Pirate Ship vs ShipStation

For a US store using USPS and UPS, this is the most direct swap, and the cost argument is hard to beat. Pirate Ship has a clear lead on price and on team size, with unlimited users included for free.

Pirate Ship's limits are the things to check. It only offers USPS and UPS. Its features page lists batch shipping from spreadsheets or integrations, rate comparison and tracking emails you can customize, but it doesn't mention automation rules. If you have 500 orders that all follow the same pattern, that may be fine. If you need rules that assign services and packages based on order details, it may not be.

My view: under about 200 orders a month, with parcels that USPS and UPS handle well, Pirate Ship is the right answer for most stores.

Shippo vs ShipStation

Shippo vs ShipStation is a closer call, and the main difference is what you get at the low-priced tier. At 200 orders, Shippo Pro costs $20.99 less per month than ShipStation Starter. It also includes things that Starter leaves out:

  • Connecting your own carrier account is free on Pro
  • Branded tracking pages, notification emails and packing slips
  • Chat and phone support
  • Up to 5 user logins at the 1 to 200 label tier

ShipStation Starter still has automated rate shopping and three users, and at 50 orders it's cheaper, at $14.99 against $19. But for most stores between 51 and 500 orders, Shippo Pro is better value on published features.

Shippo's page does say there can be extra charges for optional insurance and an address validation fee per lookup, so read that before you budget. If you have under 30 labels a month, its free Starter plan is also an option, though connecting your own carrier account costs 5¢ a label there.

Veeqo: free, with a catch worth understanding

Veeqo's pitch is strong. It offers no monthly fee to ship, no Amazon account needed, UPS, USPS, FedEx and DHL rates, the option to connect your own carrier accounts, unlimited users, and up to 5% back in Veeqo Credits on eligible labels. Unlike Pirate Ship, it covers FedEx and DHL.

The catch is the business model. Amazon owns the product, and Veeqo earns its money from a commission on labels rather than a subscription. That isn't necessarily bad, but it means you should compare rates rather than assume the free tool is the cheapest overall. And inventory features have moved behind paid plans: its plans overview says that pushing stock updates to your channels and digital picking need the Inventory plan, from $19 a month, priced by order volume.

If you sell on Amazon, Veeqo is the obvious first choice. Its page lists claims protection for Amazon orders and the option to pay from your Seller Central balance.

Other ShipStation competitors worth a look

Among the other ShipStation competitors, two are worth a mention:

  • ShippingEasy is priced close to Shippo, and it makes sense if you like its workflow. Its free plan caps at 25 shipments, so a store at 50 orders pays $19.99.
  • Ordoro suits a store under 100 labels a month that also expects to grow into inventory or dropship tools, though its next step is expensive for label printing alone.

I've left Easyship out of the table because I couldn't confirm its current prices on an official page.

When staying on ShipStation makes sense

A ShipStation alternative isn't automatically better. Stay where you are if:

  • You use your own negotiated carrier rates and rules. Standard includes both, along with custom rate shopping.
  • You have a larger team and established automations. Standard allows 10 users, and rebuilding automations elsewhere takes real time.
  • You depend on its inventory features. Standard adds bundles, lot tracking, inventory sync and serial tracking.
  • You're shipping well past 500 orders a month. The cost per order falls with volume, and the arithmetic in this guide stops being the deciding factor.
  • Your account is older. ShipStation's page notes that plans registered before July 8, 2025 may have different carrier connection fees, so check your invoice before comparing. You may be paying a different price from the one listed above.

If your automations save even an hour or two a week, the $89.99 is easily justified. A move that saves $480 a year but adds five minutes to every packing session is a bad trade.

If I had to pick one winner for a small store, it's Pirate Ship. It has no monthly bill, which means it never eats into your margin in a slow month. Check its fit with five real quotes, and you're not risking anything except a little time.

Whichever you pick, your shipping cost belongs in your numbers. Add your label and software costs to your profit margin per order, and plan for it in your startup budget if you're just setting up. Your platform matters too: both options in our Shopify vs WooCommerce guide are covered by the tools above.

Your next step

Look up your order count for each of the last three months, then find your cost in the table above. Next, quote your five most common shipments in Pirate Ship or Veeqo. If you can save money without losing a feature you use every day, run both tools side by side for a week before you cancel anything. If you're still building your store, go back to our guide on how to start an online store and pick your shipping approach when you reach that step.
